Resources required by my role as Assistant Art Director on Let the Clock Chime On.

  • Costume
  • Makeup
  • Makeup Artist
  • Props

As the assistant art director I spent most of my time with the art director.  It taught me to be disciplined and helped with my organisational skills and time management.  This is because I was to be on top of specific tasks for the set up the shots and if I did not deliver on time the time schedule would be completely messed up.  It was important to make sure everything was ready on time for the director, producer and cameraman.

For this role, I required very little technical skills, however it did require a lot of thinking outside the box to solve problems instantly on set.  Helping make the art directors/directors visions come to life was something I very much enjoyed.

Things went smoothly from the Arts department of the shoot, however if I could re do anything I would make sure that we called in the actors when they were required after the set up of the scenes, not before.

My peers and I had a big conversation about how we all worked together very effectively. I was told by the Art Director that I was a good assistant as I understood what she needed to do at all times and was around to help her with things whenever it was necessary.

I booked the make up artist through one of the speakers who came to teach us about casting (Christie). She is the one who told me she knew someone who could help while me and the rest of the crew were talking about make up and costumes.

To do my role better next time, I will make sure that I keep more time on my hands to set the scenes.

  1. Technical Skills Part 1:
This is a good start to Part 1 Anika! As well as technical equipment needed on the shoot you need to list the resources needed to make a complete short film…. i.e. from idea to final edit so include things like editing facilities. Other resources could include specialist help in sourcing actors i.e. a casting director …. Can you enlighten me on what a bullhorn is please? [Excuse my ignorance!]

    Technical Skills Part 2:
I like your comments about organisational and management skills. What kind of feedback did you get from your peers about your technical skills during the evaluation session on 24th Jan?

As you mention your role might not have required many technical skills but what about in terms of resources and specialist help? You’ve listed a make-up artist – how did you source this person and how did you brief them? And how did you source the costume and set?

Don’t forget you can talk about resources and specialist help as well as technical skills join this blog!

  2. I should have explained better. A bullhorn is the massive microphone that directors use to scream into everyones ears. But usually it is used to make sure the whole crew can hear them.

Thank you for your feedback! Sorry for any confusion.

  3. Thanks for clarifying Anika! Can you update your post by adding this information please? i.e. add a section about peer-to-peer feedback and clarify your use of specialist help [make-up artist] as the Art Director’s Assistant … just try to structure the post so it’s a bit clearer for the reader.

  4. Your Technical Skills
In your role as Assistant Art Director you were very resourceful and sought out specialist help where necessary. If you were to develop your skills it would be worth researching more about the role of the Art Director i.e. what kind of technical skills / resources / specialist help do they require to do their job? You can find more information here:

In your role as writer you used the software well. Other software that writers use is Final Draft. Specialist help that a writer might require is a researcher and a script editor.
